Originally a cinema release from Paramount, the comedy starring Kumail Nanjiani ( The Big Sick, Silicon Valley) and Issa Rae ( Little, Insecure) was offloaded by the studio to the streamer globally in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. It’s a great decision because this is exactly the kind of movie you want to watch on Netflix, an inoffensive, silly and riotous comedy with sharp dialogue, and comes in at a brisk 87 minutes. That runtime alone is reason enough to press play – why are comedies trying so hard to hit Gone With The Wind length?! The Lovebirds ’ story beats and twists may be familiar and predictable – you absolutely know how this movie will end while the production company logos are rolling at the beginning – but the combination of Nanjiani and Rae as a bickering couple is a masterstroke of comedic chemistry. Jibrani (Nanjiani) and Leilani (Rae) met four years earlier and at the start were madly in love. Now, they snipe and squabble at every turn and seem to be out of sync on every level – “I’m on one page and you’re reading a magazine! ” Despite Leilani’s wish, they’re probably not going to make a particularly effective team on The Amazing Race. On their way to a dinner party, Jibrani and Leilani are in the middle of breaking up when they accidentally become embroiled in a murder plot involving a dead cyclist, a man who claims to be a cop (Paul Sparks), frat boys listening to Third Eye Blind and a couple (Anna Camp and Kyle Bornheimer) who threatens them with bacon grease. The Lovebirds is a fast-paced and propulsive story, even if many of its turns don’t quite make sense and it’s baffling why anyone would make the terrible choices Jibrani and Leilani make. But none of that matters all that much because this whole movie exists as a platform for Nanjiani and Rae to do their thing, which is to crack jokes and be hilarious in ridiculous circumstances. Watching them trying to break a window is something you won’t forget for a while. They riff off each with such vibrancy and a mad energy that you absolutely believe them as a couple that started off strong and then settled into a pattern of complacency and then discontent. But underneath all that acid-tongued meanness, there’s genuine affection and care. Nanjiani and Rae make their characters feel lived in and super likeable, even as they’re gallivanting around in a unicorn hoodie and gold-foil bomber jacket. You want these guys to win or to at least survive. Directed by Michael Showalter from a screenplay by Aaron Abrams and Brendall Gall, The Lovebirds isn’t going to blow your mind from a story perspective – and it’s basically Date Night, which starred Tina Fey and Steve Carell. Showalter’s previous film was The Big Sick, which also starred Nanjiani who co-wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay with his wife Emily V. Gordon, based on their own meet-cute. The Big Sick had a lot more to offer and brought something fresh to the genre whereas The Lovebirds is pretty rote. But whoever thought to cast Nanjiani and Rae as the leads deserves a gold star, or three of them, because they’re the reason The Lovebirds is so much fun. You know what you’re doing this weekend. Rating: 3/5 The Lovebirds will be available to stream on Netflix from Friday, May 22 at 5pm AEST Share your movies and TV obsessions | @wenleima.

Paramount sold this Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani action-comedy to the streaming service, and Netflix released it on Friday as an “original. ” Directed by Michael Showalter, and written by Aaron Abrams and Brendan Gall, The Lovebirds has the feel of a mid-budget studio comedy—in a good way! —because it is one. THE LOVEBIRDS: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT? The Gist: We meet Jibran (Nanjiani) and Lelani (Rae) on the day they fall in love. They flirt sweetly over cocktails, take a romantic stroll through a New Orleans park, and share a perfect kiss. We flash-forward four years into their relationship, where the shine of new love has dulled. Jibran thinks Lelani spends too much time on Instagram. Lelani thinks Jibran is snobby and judgemental. And she doesn’t understand why he refuses to show her his documentary film. They have a particularly nasty fight on the way to a dinner party, and the couple mutually agrees to break up. Mere seconds later, Jibran hits a cyclist with his car. But it’s OK! He’s alive! And mostly fine! At least, he is until a man who says he’s a cop (Paul Sparks) hijacks their vehicle in the name of the law, and runs the cyclist over. Several times. Jibran and Lelani are caught by passersby standing over the dead body. Jibran has blood on his coat from trying to help the man earlier. They admit they hit him with their car. It doesn’t look good. The white witness who calls the police (Catherine Cohen, who makes her two minutes of screentime count) tells the cops, “I don’t like, think they’re murderers because they’re minorities. But Jibran and Lelani know that, statistically, they have a far greater chance of being falsely convicted than a white couple would. So they run. Their only hope of clearing their names now is to track down the real murderer, using the clues he left behind. Let the wacky, action-crime-comedy hijinks begin. Photo: Skip Bolen/NETFLIX What Movies Will It Remind You Of? : So, yes, the set-up of The Lovebirds is essentially the comedy version of the critically-acclaimed romantic drama, Queen & Slim, which stars Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith as a couple who kill a white cop in self-defense, and are forced to go on the run. But the more apt comparison is to the many other one-crazy-night comedies like Date Night, Superbad, and Game Night. Performance Worth Watching: I couldn’t possibly choose between Rae and Nanjiani, who have such an effortless back-and-forth that they practically operate as one giant super-comedian. Instead, I’ll shout out to Moses Storm who plays, to use Lelani’s nickname, “Date Rape. ” (His character’s name is actually Steve, according to the credits. ) I’ve had my eye on Storm, a stand-up comedian from my hometown, since his breakout role in NBC’s Sunnyside. His short scene in The Lovebirds was my favorite of the film. Storm lets Nanjiani and Rae do their thing, providing a straight man for their rantings, but also sneaks in a few hilarious lines of his own, like, “I have been 100 percent cooperative! ” I hope to see him in many more roles moving forward. Memorable Dialogue: Both Nanjiani and Rae had many great one-liners, but my favorite came from when Nanjiani and Rae were interrogating Storm, who mentions that his employer is a weird environmentalist. Nanjiani asks, using his best intimidation face, “Is environmentalism weird? Or is it absolutely necessary? ” “I recycle everything, ” Rae says, not missing a beat. Then Nanjiani takes the joke home: “Yeah, sometimes she’ll recycle eggshells and banana peels, and I’ll be like, that’s more compost. ” Sex and Skin: There is a charged moment where Nanjiani takes off his shirt, but, interestingly, Showalter chose not to go to the wide shot to reveal those newly chiseled, Marvel-sanctioned abs. I respect that artistic choice, to be honest. Superhero abs have no place in a mid-budget romantic comedy. Our Take: The difference between a good action-comedy and a bad action-comedy usually comes down to the effort invested in making the characters feel real. The Lovebirds puts in the effort, and it pays off. Much of that effort is carried by Nanjiani and Rae, whose chemistry and charm make it easy to fall in love with Jibran and Lelani. Kudos, also, to writers Aaron Abrams and Brendan Gall (and Martin Gero, who has a story credit), for taking the time to invest us in that relationship, even if it came at the expense of the crime plot. That part doesn’t quite come together in a satisfying manner. (Who exactly was Anna Camp again? Why was a Congressman involved? It is explained, but not very well. ) But Showalter, who also directed Nanjiani in The Big Sick, wisely lets Nanjiani and Rae take the reins. Nanjiani sneaks in some observational stand-up material about milkshakes and cigarette lighters, and it’s great. The setpieces, despite the fact that they don’t really have much to do with the larger plot, are fun. Who wouldn’t want to watch these two comedians at the top of their games play off of each other for 90 minutes? I laughed quite a bit. I do wish I could have seen The Lovebirds in the theaters before streaming it at home. I suspect, like many comedies like it, it would have benefited from an audience enjoying it together. The best jokes would have gotten belly laughs, while the just-OK jokes would have gotten chuckles. At home, with no one to feed off of, the best jokes get chuckles and the just-OK jokes get smiles. That makes a difference. Luckily, Nanjiani and Rae are funny enough to make it work under the circumstances. The Lovebirds is not a new classic, but it is a lot of fun. Our Call: STREAM IT. And if you can, get your roommates to watch it with you. Or grab a few beers and host a virtual Netflix watch party with your friends. You’ll have a great time. Watch The Lovebirds on Netflix.

(CNN) Watching Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani riff off each other is intermittently fun, but that's all there is to recommend "The Lovebirds, " a dark, somewhat chaotic romantic comedy. The movie's flight path was redirected to Netflix, which, given its limited appeal, is likely the most hospitable roost for a concept that would have faced box-office headwinds. "Lovebirds" falls within the Hitchcockian tradition of ordinary people thrust into fantastic, life-threatening situations, with the added element that the central couple's relationship is altered by the adventure -- a common trope in movies ("True Lies" comes to mind, even if one of them was actually leading a double life). The main wrinkle here is that Leilani (Rae) and Jibran (Nanjiani) are on the verge of breaking up when the ordeal begins, as director Michael Showalter (reuniting with Nanjiani after the much superior "The Big Sick") shifts rather jarringly from an opening-credit courtship sequence -- as the two are falling in love -- to when they're at each other's throats four years later, engaging in a stupid argument about how they'd fare on "The Amazing Race. " In what feels like a blink, though, they're running for their lives, after a shadowy killer (Paul Sparks) commandeers their car claiming to be a cop, then proceeds to run over a bicyclist with it. Spotted at the scene and connected to the murder weapon, they embark on a search to find out what's going on, bringing them into a dark and dangerous web of encounters -- or at least, as many as are necessary to pad out the movie to 87 minutes. The two veterans of HBO comedies (her the still-going "Insecure, " him "Silicon Valley") gamely give in to the absurdity of it all, while navigating threats -- and one conspicuously "Eyes Wide Shut" interlude -- telegraphically designed to bring them closer together. Still, the journey proceeds almost as if on auto pilot, punctuated by only the occasional moment that actually spark to life, like the two belting out Katy Perry's "Firework" together during a fleeting respite from the danger. This is, pretty transparently, one of those exercises wholly reliant on the stars to distinguish it, and they carry things well enough. It's also the sort of low-octane ride that has found luring people out of the house increasingly difficult, so among those movies forced to bypass theaters, "The Lovebirds" probably isn't sacrificing much. Mostly, the film can be seen as the latest modest steppingstone for its stars. Rae is coming off another romance, "The Photograph" (which opened on Valentine's Day, seemingly a lifetime ago), and Nanjiani -- after his breakout turn with the autobiographical "The Big Sick" and the disappointing "Stuber" -- adds another stop before his buffed-up roie in Marvel's "The Eternals. " Charitably, "The Lovebirds" isn't bad, just whatever the cinematic opposite of buffed up would be. In that sense, it's best suited for those who might be intrigued by the pairing, without feeling motivated enough to leave their nests. "The Lovebirds" premieres May 22 on Netflix.

Not just one Paramount movie is getting postponed this morning, but we heard that the studio’s April 3 action comedy The Lovebirds is also shifting following today’s big news that A Quiet Place Part II is not opening on Friday, March 20. Like a Quiet Place 2, Lovebirds’ release date is also unset. Movie theaters stateside haven’t even declared stateside that they’re closing, and distribution is already pulling a number of big event titles as they brace for a worst case scenario of the coronavirus here in the U. S. One small chain told Deadline this morning that they’re already pondering going dark until this mania blows over. Lovebirds, directed by Michael Showalter, was to make its world premiere at SXSW. Some time before SXSW finally pulled the plug on this year’s fest last Friday, Showalter, and pic’s stars Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae said they weren’t traveling to Austin, but the film would stay play. Paramount is also moving the March 20 limited release of its gang drama Blue Story which was set to go in New York and LA next Friday, March 20. Blue Story is directed by Onwubolu, who is known as Rapman on his successful YouTube videos. His film tells of two London youths whose lives are scarred by gang warfare. Its showing in the UK, where it’s made close to $6M, sparked a mass brawl at a weekend screening, causing at least two cinema chains to pull it from theaters. The fight, which occurred in Birmingham in central England, involved around 100 people, including someone wielding a machete. Seven police officers were injured trying to quell the brawl.
